Donald Trump’s latest ultimatum to introduce an further complete levy on items imported from China has been described as a “classic case” of American hypocrisy, per the China’s leadership.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry additionally remarked that the nation could enact its own undisclosed “retaliatory steps” if the American leader executes his threat, adding that the country was “fearless” of a looming trade war.

Last Friday, Donald Trump responded at Beijing’s move to strengthen its regulations for overseas sales of critical elements, accusing Beijing of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the global community “hostage”.

Additionally, he warned to withdraw from a scheduled talks with Beijing’s head of state Xi, which was expected to take place during a conference in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks.

His statements on that day unsettled financial markets, with the S&P 500 dropping over two and a half percent, marking its steepest fall since earlier this year.

These statements renewed fears of a commercial dispute between the United States and China.

This past spring, the two sides had consented to remove significant levies on each other’s imports, which had created the possibility of commerce ceasing between the two countries.

Consequently, US tariffs on products from China facing an additional import tax compared with the year’s onset, while items from the United States entering the Chinese market incur a 10% tariff.

China’s latest remarks – issued by the Ministry of Commerce in the format of official answers to journalist’s questions – reflected language from the height of the ongoing trade dispute.

The remarks condemned US export restrictions on semiconductors and chips while supporting the country’s own export controls on rare earth minerals as “normal actions” to protect domestic safety and that of all nations.

The official said that for “many years”, the United States had “expanded the interpretation” of domestic safety, abused foreign shipment regulations and “implemented” unfair treatments against China.

“Resorting to tariff threats is not the proper method to engage with the Chinese government,” the spokesperson said.

“China’s position on a trade conflict has remained consistent: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”

Recently, the Chinese government revealed it was reinforcing export controls on rare earths and additional substances critical for advanced tech manufacturing.

This move was regarded as a important measure, as the state refines about ninety percent of the planet’s critical minerals, which are used in goods such as solar panels and handheld devices.

Latest statements from both governments are being viewed by observers as a method of enhancing bargaining power in preparation for forthcoming discussions.

Remains uncertain whether a summit between Donald Trump and President Xi, scheduled at a conference in the Republic of Korea before month’s end, will go ahead.
