Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
