Hellenic Police Enhance Protection Following Demonstrations Against Israel Cruise Ship

Greek officials have significantly increased security measures at two major ports in an initiative to prevent demonstrators from approaching a passenger ship transporting visitors from Israel on an eleven-day voyage around the Mediterranean.

Latest Demonstrations Prompt Enhanced Protection

These protective measures at the Peloponnesian ports was implemented following previous protests when the cruise vessel arrived in Kalamata recently. Previously, passengers aboard the same vessel were blocked from going ashore and the vessel had to reroute to Cyprus after local residents organized demonstrations on the Cycladic island of Syros.

"In spite of the ceasefire, Israel is still continuing its attacks in Gaza," commented a schoolteacher who took part in the Kalamata demonstration. "Innocent, non-combatant people are being slain."

Passenger Encounter and Public Opinion

From higher vantage points, travelers watched as demonstrators in Kalamata chanted: "You require the police, you're not wanted in Greece."

Yannis Sifanakis, who spent the summer organizing anti-war protests throughout Greece, asserted: "Those Israelis who approve of the policies of their government aren't accepted here."

Geopolitical Context and Foreign Ties

Constantine Filis explained: "Because of geographic proximity and our longstanding relationships with the Arab nations, the average Greek is more attuned to what is happening in Gaza than the average citizen of central or northern Europe."

"Greece is in a complex circumstance," he continued. "The State of Israel is much more important for us as an associate than it is for many European nations."

Commercial and Travel Consequences

Government statistics indicate that more than 600,000 Israeli visitors visited Greece in 2024, with projections of increased visitation this year. This significant arrival emphasizes the much-improved relationship between the two countries since the 1980s, when Greek governments maintained a firmly pro-Palestinian policy.

Strategic Alliance and Geographic Considerations

For the Greek government, Israel represents not only a significant counterbalance to neighboring competitor Turkey but also provides the additional advantage of better official channels to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to jeopardize its connections with Israel," commented the expert. "However from a ethical standpoint we must be more inclusive, more measured, more determined to show the improper actions of Israel in Gaza."

Expanding Protest Movement and International Reaction

The scale of the Greek rally initiative has caught Israel off guard. In recent months, the nation's diplomatic department warned travelers to remain inconspicuous, while local media referred to Athens as a "former paradise" due to political graffiti showing up on edifices in the city center.

The head official of the Hebrew Communities Council in Greece voiced worry: "Naturally we're worried. The sort of rhetoric we're experiencing can so easily become prejudiced."

Upcoming Events and Demands

Gradually, protesters have targeted Athens' tight relationships with Israel. As many as 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to request the closure of the Souda Bay military facility, a NATO facility that since the outbreak of hostilities in Gaza has served as a key refuelling post for US aircraft carriers, military jets and ships destined for Israel.

"There have been victories," stated Petros Constantinou. "Our primary request, currently, is to halt every partnership with Israel."
