Minister Says MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Advised to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

A defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about secret matters in all vehicles.

Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

During a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have discussions at a secret level in any kind of car, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Defence Context

This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The broader defence situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, from vehicle use to discussions habits.
